Undoubedly much perhaps most of what is being done or achieved at the present day by educated India whether Hindu or Musulman in the sacred name of 'adapttion to environment ' deserves to be investigated as to whether the same be the result of the growth of originality that is of the constructive powers of the educated mind of to-day or on the contrary be the outcome of an accelea [...] It is no longer satisfied with the mechanical copying whether of the forms of the Past or of a dominant Present ; but in organic correlation with the Past and in a spirit of friendly co-operation with the Present seeks to give birth to newer forms of life which are the results of fresh creative effort which are the manifestations of new-born constructive capacities. [...] The dates and modes of acquisition have placed Ceylon under the government of one Department of the State with the Colonial Secretary at its head while the Secretary of State for India in Council rules India in the name of the Crown of Englami. [...] The greatness of the esoteric doctrines and ethical ideals of the religion of Buddha is based on the soundest principles suited to the most advanced intellects and nations and the ' great Master has been canonised in India and is now regarded as an Incarnation or the physical manifestation of the Supreme God Himself. [...] The result of all this has been that Degrees and Examinations Examinations and Degrees —these constitute in the eyes of most of us the visible symbol of the higher educational progress that is made in a country ; and safeguards are from time to time accordingly prposed against the depreciation" of the value of the Degree by fixing high the Examination standard and more frequently suggestions
