Further we have to note that the depression in Madras affected not merely the imports of British piece-goods but also import of British yarns ; for we find that during the nine months January tSeptember 1909 the value of the imports of Lancashire yarn' into Madras came down to less than a half of the value of the imports during the corresponding period of the previpus year the exact figures [...] Government has sanctioned the free grant to the Company of half the fuel to be used in the furnaces of the Madras Glass Works during the first two years of its working the maximum grant for tly: whole period of two years coming up to 7 200 tons.* It was pointed out to the Government that the commercial success of the industry depended entirely on the possibility of training indigenous labour to [...] places on record the deep sense of gratitude of the Shareholders and the public both in the City and in the Presidency for the splendid and invaluable services rendered by the Hon'ble Mr. [...] And in the case of Ceylon where the sway of Bitddhism has continued almost unbroken down to our own days we have incontestable evidence of Buddhism ruling and guiding and directing philanthropic activities of the rulers of the land even so late as the last half of the t8th century A.
