Even after the dOvnf411 of Vijay'anagar thexountry did noti8o THE DAWN AND DAWN SOCPETY'S MAGAZINE pass entirely into the hands of the Muhammadans but remained in the hands of Hindu chiefs called Polygars and of such Hindu Royal Houses as the Pandasand Nayaks of Madura and later on of the Maratha Rajas of Tanjore and the Woodeyar Rajas of Mysore. [...] Then by the time that the Mughal Empire reached its greatest extent the Marathas rose in the South and the Sikhs and Jats in the North and in the course of half a century established their rule which lasted until the times of the British conquest over the greater portion of the country. [...] Such a history would be a synthesis and resume of all the past developments of the Indian peoples capable Of endowing them with a new strength and energy to grapple with and solve the new problems of the modern world and achieve fresh conquests in regions of the Ideal for the spiritual advancement of the race and of Humanity.
