International incidents such as the en!orcement of sanctions against Italy in her Ethiopian campaign the Spanish rebellion and the demands of Germany and Italy for a rr.ore equitable share of world raw materials were some of the fmmediate caus.e3 of the rapid development of the iron and steel industries. [...] 1) partly because of the use of scrap iron as a substitute for ore and partly because of the utilization of ore from stock piles in most of the countries. [...] There is no doubt that; one of the motives of her attack on Scandinavia was the desire to monopolize the Swedish"MINERALS AND MINERAL PRODUCTS 99 iron ore.'' (32) It seenis that Germany now possesses most of the ore that she needs to keep her blast furnaces going to meet the heavy demands of the iron and steel industries located near the coal-field of the Ruhr Valley including the Krupp steel wor [...] A lack of domestic resources of iron ore and the necessity for importing ever-increasing quantities of this vital raw material as well as pig-iron and scrap was the most serious problem confronting the two major heavy industries of Japan the manufacture of armament and ship-building in the pre-war period. [...] In the first half of the 1929-38 decennium France ranked second in the world as producer of iron ore (metal content) and yielded place only to two countries—the U. S. A. and the U. S. S. R. in the latter half of the decade.
