The Journal of the Darjeeling Natural History Society January 1937

1937

The Society was started about the end of 1923 the objects being to maintain the Museum in a proper condition ; to promote the study of Natural History and to get together as complete as possible collections of Natural History specimens from a limited area including the civil districts of Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling and the State of Sikkim " as well as what could be procured from the neighbourin [...] On the border of the tea and about 20 feet inside the forest the parent birds had dug a retort-shaped hole in the earth that was clinging to the roots of a large overturned tree. [...] We found a place where lie had sat down for the night and he was apparently a large tusker we saw the impression of his tusks as in the ground ; we also noted that in the rear of the spoor was the impression of a chain ! The man said that lie had escaped from captivity and that a piece of chain was still on its hind leg. [...] I believe that in this case the smoke of the black powder and the jump to the side saved me as lie charged the smoke. [...] I therefore think that some bite at it because they consider in their case wrongly that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush: That a thorough knowledge of the habits and diet of the Alammalia of the vicinity acquired by careful and patient observation is invaluable to the collector rily►a the Mislurri thoroughly proved to Wells and myself.
