Bulletin of the Deccan College Research Institute March 1952

1952

The Population:' The universe from which the sample was drawn consisted of the students from the schools in Poona Corporation and Camp areas where Marathi is the medium of instruction. [...] Throughout the time that the students wrote the questionaires the inquirer was present in the class-room in order to clear any doubts that arose from the questions. [...] But after a careful examination of the data he makes the following statement "The conclusion however is incontrovertible that at the end of the Peshwa rule a much larger population was being sustained in the service of and by the patronage of the state than in 1937."3 He adds that the bulk of the benefit of this was derived by the advanced castes. [...] The advanced castes are concentrated in the wards of the western part of the city and the other castes are concentrated in the eastern part. [...] The report states The most enlightened community amongst the Hindus is that of the Kayasthas who though only 3% of the population in the district maintain a higher percentage (19.4%) at the higher secondary stage.
