Go ye 0 Bhikkhus and wander forth for the gain of the many for the welfare of the many in compassion for the world for the good for the gain for the welfare of gods and men. [...] Some writers believe that the outbreak of war was prevented only by the defeat of the Marathas in 1817-18 the victory of the Siamese against the Burmese and the death of Bo-daw-pa-ya in 1819. [...] The principal diffculty arose over the Burmese demand that the treaty should be concluded in the name of the Queen of England —not in the name of the GovernoGeneral of India. [...] The London Chamber of Comerce requested the Secretary of State "either to annex the \ vhole of Native Burma or to assume a prtectorate over that country by the appointment of a sovereign under British control." On October 22 1883 the Chief Commissioner sent to the Burmese Government the folloWing demands : (1) An Envoy from the Viceroy should be received at Mandalay and the case of the Bo [...] The truth of this tradition can be seen from the close resemblance of the facial fetures of the Bengalecs and the Sinhlese and from certain modes of expression in the languages of the IWO peoples.
