1888

My extracts are from the twelfth of the treatises which is a practical catechism entitled “ The Form of authoritative Instruction.” The “good teacher is the spiritual Guru who for the salvation of souls has assumed a sacred form which is as it were the embodiment of ascetic virtue perfect benevolence and devotion to the supreme and transcendental wisdom.” The “disciple is one who is the p [...] : the wisdom that discerns the difference between the temporal and the eternal ; the renunciation of the enjoyment of rewards hero and in other worlds ; the habits of mystic quietude and self-restraint ; and the desire for release from all corporeal bonds.” NO. [...] 1.188& the village is a demon temple of mud and palmyra wood thatched with its low grated door at the further' end and dimly visible amid the debris of old withering decaying garlands a row of images of demons the material and artistic excellence being in proportion to the wealth and zeal of the community. [...] The books were in tatters and in many parts the letter-press was obliterated by the passing of the finger over the page in following the reading. [...] At the same time I have to attend to the woring of the ground for the site of the Mission-house clearing away of all young jungle which has to be rooted up cutting away and levelling the top of the hill and procuring wood for building with.
