Asia. March 1938

1938

Three of the cruisers which had sailed for Sydney to join in the celebration of the 150th annversary of the founding of Australia were ordered to continue to Singapore to take part in the ceremonies at the opening of the naval base there. [...] Opening the hundredth session of the Council of the League of Nations England France and Russia in turn spoke their unshaken faith in the aims and ideals of the League in spite of the defection of Japan Gemany and Italy and the decision of the small powers to exempt theselves from the use of sanctions. [...] There are catlogues of part of these effects of the paintings the bronzes and the porcelains and doubtless there were lists somewhere of the jewels and the jades the e/o8onnes and the robes. [...] Strictly speaking the Forbidden City is the part of the scheme enclosed by a moat and crenelated walls but with it belong the two immense courtyards and the walled esplanade which form the approach the altar of earth and the great grove of arbor vitae which flanks the two courtyards on the west and the huge dynastic temple (the 7ai Miao) on the east. [...] To the east is the sweep of the rose red walls of the Temple of Heaven to the west are the walls of the Temple of Agriculture.
