The strength of the Japanese lies in their control of the lines of communication and the main economic centers on the coast and in the interior. [...] In fact the only important answer that the Japanese have to the work of the Red army around their lines of communication and in the interior is an attempt to organize the village gentry on their side a policy which has obviously arisen out of the social conditions in the villages. [...] If the division of the powers is the first condition of liberation the manner in which the help of the U.S.S. [...] The list of casualties includes large well-known estalishments like the National Central University (Nanking) the Tung Chi and the Fu Tan universties (Shanghai) the American-supported University of Shanghai the Hopeh Medical and Agricultural Colleges (Paoting) the Kiangsi Medical College and the Rural Normal School (Nanchang) the Hopeh College of Commerce and Law the Hopeh College of T [...] In short Japan's aim in the preent conflict is to lay the foundation of a synthetic world culture harmonizing within its fold the seeingly conflicting elements of the spiritual culture of the East and the scientific civilization of the West.
