The loss makes harder the defense of the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea and it deals a blow to British prestige among the Arabs. [...] Social effects of the supeimposition of an advanced part of the popultion on the backward west and the conversion of the latter into the government's main war bases are obviously profound and too complex to begin to examine here. [...] After many years of struggle between the feudal and military classes on the one side and the more liberal bourgeois urban quarters of capital and industry on the othpr the feudal military forces had been gaiing in influence ever since the beginning of the China campaign along with a simultaneous icrease in the influence of the State. [...] The mission sent to the United States from India to negotiate the establishment of an aircraft factory in India under American direction was still under English command but the English Brigadier-General C. S. Tute one of the commission's three leading members as quoted in the New York Herald Tribune of August 3 1940 gave the following testimony to the efficiency of the Indian munitions factor [...] The United States is now compelled to lace the prospect of the increasing progress of State economy across the Atlantic and across the Pacific a progress liable to lead to a considerable strengthening of State economy in the United States as well.
