FELIX HOWLAND now head of the social studies department at the Tome School in Maryland taught at Alborz College Teheran; organized the supply sytem for the construction of the Trans-Iranian Raiway; and in Afghanistan was adviser to the Minister of Education professor of English in the Faculty of Sciences and head of the English department at Habibia College. [...] A poster that was to be seen all over France painted the vast expanse of the world that was included in the French and British empires showed how small Germany was in comparison and offered the French people the comforting moral We shall win because we are the stronger." But as one of the best informed French journalists bitterly observed when the French army was in the last agony of defeat " [...] Five years of the Philippine army and three years of the war in Asia have brought the defense of the Philippines back into the lap of the United States. [...] Moreover because of "the emergency" the Assembly has accorded to the President some of the most extraordinary peace-time powers in the history of any supposed demoracy including the right to "direct the economic activities" of the people of the Philippines. [...] The great caravan routes which had made Afghanistan the toll-gate of Asia in the Middle Ages withered and died after the discovery of water routes to the East in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
