Since the Calukyas of Baddmi are said to have obtained their kingdom through the favour of the Boar-incarnation of Visnu they adopted the boar as their family lcincchana just as the Pallavas had the bull the Rästraktitas the eagle and the Western Gangas the elephant. [...] It may be noted that the copperplate or stone inscriptions 'discovered till now in the Ceded Districts belong to the period posterior to the conquests of Kirttivarman I and the famous digvijaya of Pulikegin II ; and before these distinguished events the home of the Calukyas must have comprised the small principality in the neighbourhood of Vätdpi in the Kadarfiba territory. [...] Further Siripavata ( Sriparvata ) of the Nägarjunikonda inscription was situated in the Palnad taluka of the Guntur district different from the Srigailarn of the Kurnool district and the Caliki of the Hirafiaka clan could not have lived in the vicinity of the latter place. [...] I am of opinion that the provision of a special room called therikT provided for playing at dice leaves no doubt that the kings of the period were fond of dice and consequently the writer of the present manual intended for the use of Kings of the period has taken care to specify a ItyrrOTT in the list of the king's inner apartments recorded by him. [...] (5) We are told by the writers of Indian history that the first record of the use of the canon and gun-powder in Indian warfare is in the Memoirs of Baber.'° In 1528 Babar forced the passage of the Ganges near Kanauj with the aid of artillery.
