Administration Report on the Jails of Orissa for the Year 1939

SIR I HAVE the honour to submit my report on the administration of the jails of the Province of Orissa for the year 1939. [...] The district jail at Cuttack however continued to function as a central jail of the province in the matter of confinement of long-term prisoners and live-convicts in the absence of any separate central jail in the province. [...] 1 shows the daily average number of all classes of prisoners confined in the Orissa jails from the year 1036 -up to the end of the year under review. [...] In addition to the existing industries of the jail the manufacture of Excise uniforms was taken in hand in the early part of the year and several orders of the Excise Department were duly complied with hi the year under report. [...] It will be evident from the above that the number of deaths has decreased and the general health of the prisoners was much better in the year mulct review than in the previous year.
