General Statistics of Attendance.-The following table compiled from General Table III shows the number of schools and colleges in the Bombay Presidency and the number of pupils in them at the end of each year from 1892-93 to 1896-97 :- Class of Institutions. [...] The three remaining divisions of the Presidency suffered less but the Northern Division and Kathiawar were threatened with plague which indeed Amineaffected the ThAna and Surat Districts and in the Southern Division Amine and high.prices prevailed yet the returns of the divisions show an increase and testify to the vitality and strength of our educational system.4 PROGRESS OF EDUCATION IN TIL [...] The gain in the number of p►tpIls was proportionately greater in the four years than the increase in the number of institutions so that the average strength of an institution was higher in 1896 than in 1893.
