Annual Returns of Statistics Relating to Forest Administration in India Provinces Only 1941-42 to 1944-45

1949

The outstanding feature of the period under report was the second world war and its repeicussions on the activities of the Forest Departments. [...] The war put a heavy strain on the forest resources of the country and generally speaking the normal activities of the Departments had to be expanded to meet the miprecedented dmands of the Defence Department for timber ; this resulted in unavoidable overfelling in most forests. [...] The Assam Survey Department surveyed the existing boundaries of the Morapagladiya Reserve in Kamrup Division demarcated the disputed Bhutan boundary of a portion of the Khalingduar Reserve in Darrang Division and settled the Tripura boundary dispute in the Longai Reserve in the Sylhet Division. [...] It completely ceased after the introduction of the Government of India Act 1935 and the transfer of Forests to the provinces. [...] The number of officers in the Service was only two one in the Punjab and the other in Bombay during the period under review.
