If quantity is taken by comparing the value of the year's trade re-calculated at prices of 191' 18 with the actual' value of the trade in 1917-18 the figures show a decrease of Over R1Qcrores or 6 per cent in the volume of the import trade. [...] In view of the large increase in the imports and exports of Government stores and in the imports of silver on Government account in 1918-19 it may be of interest to set out the figures Imports and exports of Government stores and of treasure on Government account. [...] - in regard to the sources of supply of foreign yarn the feature of the year was the large increase in the imports from Japan and the decrease in the share of the United Kingdom. [...] The shares of the principal countries in the imports of piecegoods were :- The United Kingdom 77.3 per cent ; Japan 21.2 per cent ; the United States 1 per cent ; Italy 1 per cent ; and Holland 1 per cents The descriptions of piecegoods produced in the Indian mills and exported from British India will be found in the following chapter (page 16). [...] The noticeable feature of the year was the decrease in the share of the United Kingdom from 85 per cent in the preceing year to 70 per cent and the increase in the case of Australia' rom 12 per cent to 26 per cent" CHAPTER III.
