The meeting was of the opinion that the action of the South African Government in subjecting Indians to legislative segregation and racial humiliation was reprehensi-[ 12 ] ble and that without adequate enquiry as to the cause of such peneteation on the part of the Indians into the European areas the adoption of such measures was unjustified. [...] The Chamber addressed a letter to the Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of War Transport on the 4th June 1943 pointing out to him the injustice of the step taken by the Commissioners for the Port of Calcutta and requested him to redress the grievance of bona fide shippers by permitting them to pay on the old scale of charges in respect of the commitments they had made prior [...] The under Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of War Transport by a letter dated the 17th June 1943 informed the Chamber that the proposals of the Commissioners for the Port of Calcutta were approved by the Centre after the careful consideration and that it was premature to think of revising the same which had been enforced recently. [...] In a letter dated the 1st July 1943 addressed by the Chamber to the Secretary to the Government of India in the Revenue Department the repurcussions on the Industry was described comprehensively and the various rules and regulations made thereunder criticised in the light of their working. [...] It was stated that the Chamber had been given to understand that the embargo was placed on the export of the commodity subsequent to the represetations of the Provincial Governments in the Department of Agriculture to the effect that due to the dearth of Sulphate of Ammonia bone-meal was required by the Department concerned to replace the same in the preparation of manure to implement the Gr
