Annual Report of the Department of Agriculture Bombay Presidency 1908-09

1909

When a certain amount of the soil at the bottom of the pipe has been broken up in this way the bar is pulled up and the chisel removed from the end and a mud shell substituted to allow the removal of the soil that has been broken up. [...] The principal accidents which are liable to occur are these (a) In changing the chisel for the 'mud shell and vice veraa or in screwing on new lengths of the iron bar the work is apt to be done carelessly and the joint not made tight ; with the result that the tool or a length of the bar bearing the tool may get left behind in the bore hole ; and. [...] The tabular statement showing the work done and cost incurred the maps of the looalities showing the wells and the charts of the subsoil strata will be submitted separately to Government. [...] The water of the latter would be used in any case ; whereas the water which remains in the many large reaches of the Deccan rivers can very seldom be drawn up by a mot owing to the configuration of the river bank and the damage. [...] From a study of many riparian situations in the Deccan and the working of existing pumping plants belonging to the Department and to private gentlemen I venture to submit the following four cases which I think are typical of suitable situations which are to be found all over the Deccan and answer to the needs and capacity of the cultivators.
