in the success of our efforts for the promotion of education are her material interests altogether unaffected by the advance of European knowledge in India! this knowledge will teach the natives of India the marvellous results of the employment of labour and capital rouse them to emulate us in the development of the vast resources of their country.. [...] We have next to consider the manner in which 'isur object to be effected ; and this leads us to the question of the medium through which knowledge is to be conveyed to the people of India.' It has hitherto been necessary owing to the want of translations or adaptations Of European works in the Vernacular languages of India and to the fiery 'imperfect shape in which European knowledge is to be [...] In the selection of the Heads of the Educational Departments the Inspectors and other officers it will be of the greatest importance to Secure the services of persons who are not only best able from their character position and acquirements to carry our objects into effect but who may command the confidence of the natives of India. [...] A knowledge of the Sanskrit language the root of the Vernaculars of the greater part of India is more especially necessary to those who are engaged in the work of composition in those laguages ; while Arabic through Persian is one of the component parts of the Urdu language which extends over so large a part of Ilindootan and is we are informed capable of considerable development. [...] Having provided for the general superintendence of education and for the institution of Universities not EO much to be in themselves plaoe(of instruction as to test the value of the education obtained elsewPere we proceed to consider first the different classes of colleges and schools which should be maintained in simultaneous operation in order to place within the reach of all climes of nati
