Progress of Kannada Research in Bombay Province From 1941-1946

1948

Kher)"PREFACE As a result of the Government order suspending the printing of the Kannada Research works at the Government Press Bombay in the duration of the war the vast amount of the materials prepared for the press had to be kept idle during the last 6 or 7 years. [...] The most important discoveries in the first consist of extensive sites of the Early Iron or historic ages at Vadagaon-Mädhavapiir near Belgaum Itgi on the Ttnigabhadra in the Shirhatti Taluka Brahmapuri on the Pafichagaila near Kolhäpur and Pattadkal on the Malaprabha in the Badami Taluka of the Bijapur District. [...] The height of the mound and the portion dug out which is assignable to the Buddhist layer would perhaps bear the surmise that the lowermost level contained the remains of Brahmanical culture of the pre-Andhra period? D. onwards down to the time 5"of the later Chälukyas of Kalydrii when the Chand5.'var branch of the same stock was ire possession of it it may be suggested as a plausible view that Ponnama of Saka goo was [...] But the name SOmegvara coupled with the epithets The crest jewel of the Yadava clan and the chosen lord of the Dvaravatipura " which are commonly borne with the Yadavas of Devagiri leads to the only -possible surmise that he must be a Hoysala monarch.
