from his safe and in accessible retreat in the Khondmals he continued to commit depredations in the adjoining Ghumsur country and also in some parts of Daspalla"3 and Nayagarh and succeeded for a time in evading the pursuit of the agency troops and those of the Baudh Chief about the year 1855 immediately after the Baudh State had been replaced in charge of the Superintendent of the Tributary Maha [...] Present situation and Boundaries-Baudh is bounded for sixty-five miles on the north by the Mahanadi on the east by the State of Daspalla on the west by the Tel river; and on the south by the Kondh hills. [...] The opportunity thus afforded by the present settlement would enable the State authorities to place the means of instruction within the reach of all if ever pie of the cess be strictly devoted to the promotion of education and if the State sets the example in the management of its schools by contributing at least an equal amount from the general revenues. [...] On the representation of the tenants and others the Marfatdars are being made to file written engagements to perform the Puja properly the details of the Puja being given in the engagement. [...] That the comparatively small difficulty with which the new assessment was realised goes to show that the new rates have been universally accepted by almost all the tenants of the State and I take this to be in indebitable proof of the moderate nature of the enhancement indicating as it does the willingness and ability of the royats to bear the new rent.
