Madras Chintaladevi Ongole Cattle Farm Report: 1928-29

1929

The farm was opened in the year 1918-19 with a view to improve the Ongole breed and to raise a pedigree herd of cattle by careful mating rearing and selection and to provide some good breeding bulls for distribution since the breed lost its fame in the tract due to promiscuous breeding communal grazing and several other causes. [...] The yields of the different crops with the exception of paddy are poor and this is mainly due to the indifference of the dry land ryot in manuring his land and effecting improvement. [...] The farm this year has been handicapped by the failure of the monsoons and the closing of the Mopaud channel for repairs.3 Cattle. [...] The Tots in the tract are now realizing the value of our breeding bulls and the demand for services is increasing. [...] With a view to find out the keeping quality of milk stud v was made by sending milk in the motor bus to Kavali in the hot summer months and the monsoon months; it was found that milk drawn from the cows at 6 a.m.„ and transported 36 miles by bus remained sweet for 8 hours in the hot weather and 14 hours in the monsoon months.
