Government of Bengal Irrigation Department. Report on Major Rivers in the Nadia Rivers Division For the Year 1925

1926

Changes in the bed of the Ganges and erosion of bank.—Before the flood of 1925 there was a fairly high island in front of the Dhulian entrance and the navigable channel was by its north and west. [...] The length of the Kaliganj entrance bar from Joyrampur nose to the silted-up head of the Durgapur chancel measured along the ridge close to the water on the left bank of Faracca channel is 5 600 feet. [...] The first length of the bar slopes from the Faracca to the Ganges and the remaining length rises gradually up to about R. L. 72.00 from Faracca to the Ganges. [...] Even when the Bhagrathi is in flood the discharges of the two streams fall into the Bhagirathi and it is very rarely that the B liagirathi flows into them_ the observations taken in 1915 to 1922 it is ascertained that the combined flood discharges of the two streams in to the Bhagirathi ranged between 10 200 cusecs to 39 600 cusecs and the Bansloi supplied 90 per cent. [...] When the Brahmaputra or Jamuna is in flood which takes place generally before the Ganges rises the water from the Jamuna enters into the Boral and the reversal of current takes place when the Ganges flood is high and Challan Bhil discharges into the Boral through the Gomani.
