The subjoined statement shows the rates of freight charged during October 1887 and October 1888 on consignments of raw cotton turmeric food-grains and oilseeds tobacco spices and dried fruits carried from and to Cawnpore and via Cawnpore and from and to Aligarh and via' Aligarh to and from the Tirhoot State Railway stations of Ujiarpore and stations above and Somastipore and stations [...] The export traffic is reported to have been affected by the high charges current for sea freight." The District Traffic Superintendent Tundla explains the fluctuations during October last as follows :— " Although the greater portion of the wheat despatched during the beginning of the month from this district for shipment continued to be forwarded to Bombay towards the end of the month [...] The net quantity of the downward and upward traffic and the proportion of the Calcutta traffic to the total trade are given below :— Downward traffic Upward„ Total[...] In October 1888 the Traffic Manager East Indian Railway wrote as follows :— "The growth of the downwards coal traffic may in the first instance be attributed to the opening of the Jubilee Bridge and the consequent increased facilities for delivering coal and coke in Calcutta and in Eastern Bengal generally.
