Situated on the right bank of the Ganges at the foot of the Siwalik Hills close by the gorge through which the river debouches upon the plains. [...] It corresponds best with the figures of Durga ; but if the name assigned to it is correct the figure must be that of the Puranik Maya Devi who according to the Bhagavata was the " energy of the supreme and by her whose name is Maya the Lord made the universe." But the action of the figure is most decidedly opposed to this identification ; and I am therefore inclined to assign the statue to [...] The present town ' says the Government official account of Saharanpur District and the ruined village of Mäyapur both He on the right bank of the Ganges at the southern base of the Siwalik range through which by a gorge or natural breach the river enters the plains. [...] The great assemblage of pilgrims takes place on the first day of the month of Baisakh the commencement of the Hindu solar year (March—April) and the anniversary of the day upon which the Ganges first appeared upon earth. [...] The hill of Hasan Abdul has been celebrated for its beauty since the Mughal times ; and to the south of the shrine on the opposite bank of the Haroh lies the garden of Wah formerly a resting-place of the Emperors on their way to the valley of Kashmir but now a mass of junglclad ruins.
