The main causes for the rise in prices included the raising of gold price by the British Treasury and the Chinese Government reduced sales of both metals by the Reserve Bank at Bombay and the unsettled world position. [...] The effect of all these factors during the month under review was bearish but on the other hand the Japanese war the uncertain post-war adjustments among the Great Powers as well as the generally high level of prices in the country arising out of the war prevented any rapid sliddown in the commodity prices.
