But the delegates to the Indian Economic Conference are trained students of the subject and can with their knowledge and experience discern for themselves the meaning of the facts set forth in the hand-book and their bearing on the trend of events in the Province and the country as a whole. [...] Excellent crops of rice are accordingly obtained in many parts of the districts and the evidence of good cultivation is seen in the ability of this part of the province to sustain a large population ; in the district of Cuttack the population reaches a density of 565 to the square mile. [...] The part of the province which lies to the north of the Ganges and to the south of the Nepal boundary is one of the richest and most fertile agricultural tracts in the whole of India. [...] The functions of the Department of Industries are to direct the management and development of indutries the collection collation and dissemination of commercial and industrial intelligence and the control of technical education and industrial training and the development of pisciculture. [...] The intimate knowledge of the markets both Indian and foreign for the products of local handicrafts enable the department to understand the problems confronting the cottage workers and to direct their energy for the successful solution of the same.
