It signifies also the building up of an edifice on solid foundation ; and it holds out hopes of an inspiring future of many many years of sustained endeavour for the advancement of knowledge and propagation of well-considered theories and principles and over and above all of work for the intellectual enlighenment of the people of the world calculated to reduce misery lessen sense of despair [...] On the contrary the more numerous the wants the lesser the happiness and the greater the suffering and sorrow. [...] We spoke of the grandeur of our history of the greatness of our literature of the excellence of our arts music sculpture painting. [...] Impressed by the magnificent achievements of science which surpass the old miracles of mythology many of us are inclined to accept the all-sufficiency of matter the omnipotence of the world of sense and account for psychology and history on the basis of material consderations. [...] The possibility of the misuse of freedom which is the source of anxiety according to Kierkegaard shows the disrelationship of the self to its own self.
