Brief Sketch of the Meteorology of the Bombay Presidency For 1899-1900
1900
2. The monsoon set in on the 9th June at Bombay and the rainfall was heavy up to 23rd June but from that date the usual monsoon season brought little or no rain to a great portion of the area which is chiefly dependent upon the Bombay current for rainfall and the effect of this drought was the more serious as the country had not entirely recovered from the effects of the scarcity due to the scan [...] The rise in the month of July was sudden at all the three southerly stations and the more northerly the station the more pronounced was the rise. [...] Tie sudden drop in the curve at Deesa and Karachi in the month of January was due to the unusual cool weather that prevailed in Sifid Cutch Kathidwar and the whole of Gujarat from about the 15th to 25th of January 1900 and the low temperature at the southerly stations Poona and BelgauM was probably due to the usual wet weather in those months over the Peninsula. [...] From the 19th to the end of the month the weather on the Malabar Coast and generally in the south-east of the Arabian Sea was n1ore or' ess disturbed and the rainfall during the greater part of this period was due to an advance of monsoon winds. [...] Over the west of the Peninsula and the east of the Arabian Sea the mean atmospheric pressure of the month was much above the normal which caused an unusual amount of northing in the winds over the Peninsula.
