Svarnalata. Scenes from Hindu Village Life in Bengal

1917

Beginning with Sarala they went on to criticise the character of every young woman in the village and the conclusion they came to was that in the present age there was not a single girl of good character with the exception of course of Pramada. [...] He then turned to the maidservant and said " Where is your mistress Syama ? " " In there " said Syama as she caught up a pitcher pretending that she was going to fetch water from the pond. [...] When therefore he heard her talk in that fashion he could not but be angry and said " You often talk of leafing my house ; why don't you do so ? " " Why do you mean to say " she said " that my father is not able to support me ? " Pramada insinuated that her father was not unable to provide for her although the fact was that he was extremely poor. [...] He certainly wished to tell her he was very sorry and sit down by her side and try to comfort her but as he felt that would only be adding fuel to the flame of her grief he left the room in the hope that she would be herself again when left alone for an hour or so. [...] Was she not all submission to her sister-in-law ? Was it not her constant endeavour to please her in every possible way she could ? Did she not work continually without ever looking to her own comfort ? Did she not know that it was her interest to keep in with her ? She had always taken care so to conduct herself as to give her cruel and malicious sister-in-law no reason whatever"28 SVARNALATA to
