[...] The Regulating Act of 1773 recognized the territorial sovereignty of the Company a4d at the same time altered the constitution of the Courts of Proprietors and Directors and the system of Indian administration. [...] The statute of 1858 abolished the East India Company and the Board of Control and transferred the responsibility of the government of this country to a Secretary of State who must be a member of the British ministry and thus amenable to the control of the Parliament and the Crown. [...] The act of 1848 gave the finishing touch to the development of the constitution of the Government of India by declaring that British India was to be governed directly by and in the name of the Crown acting through a Secretary of State to whom were to be transferred all the powers formerly exercised either by the Court of Directors or by the Board of Control.
