McNally’s Sanitary Handbook for India

1923

The successes of Grecian arms and the glories of Grecian art were prepared and fostered by the great attention which the Greeks paid to physical culture and the final downfall of the Grecian Empire has been attributed to the physical decay of the nation brought about by the prevalence of malaria. [...] on the surface of the ground without even the pretence of a pit or cesspool where people drink the water in which they have just bathed is it surprising that welknown water-borne diseases like cholera dysentery and enteric fever are never absent ? The amount of water required daily varies greatly and depends chiefly on the habits of the people and the sanitary arrangements of the locality. [...] the slope of the surface and the nature of the soil 16 as well as upon the rate and quantity of rainfall. [...] If much water be drawn from a Well the level of the water falls below the general level of the ground water ; the latter therefore for some distance around flows towards the well and becomes depressed in the shape of an inverted cone the apex of which is the surface of the water in the well. [...] The distance at which surface contamination may affect a well depends upon the height and direction of flow of the subsoil water the depth of the well the amount of water drawn from it and the nature of the soil.
