Gleanings from Indian Classics Heroines of India

1893

The sounds of music rise above the noise of the household ; the elders are smoking with all the gravity of busy men and receiving the guests with all the grace of oriental courtesy. [...] WE cannot write the history of the Indian heroines unless we narrate the deeds and tell the history of the Heroine of all the heroines the greater: _ of alIthe great women of the world —we mean the Goddess whose figure adorns most of the temples of India. [...] She is worshipped by the mildest of the mild and the gentlest of the gentle as the Goddess of mercy and kindness; she is worshipped by the wickedest of the wicked as the Goddess of fury and carnage. [...] When in the great monkey war after io years' struggle Rama could not rescue his wife from the clutches of the Rashasa king he worshipped the goddess on the shore of the blue ocean and prayed to her to come and protect him and his wife from the oppression of the wicked Rakshasa. [...] She is the best model to follow for the humanity ; she is the grandest example of womahood ; she is the greatest and the best heroine that the world has ever produced —nay she is the Goddess who is the source who is the protectress who is the final rest of this visible universe.
