Agricultural Research Institute Pusa. the Improvement of Tobacco Cultivation in Bihar

1915

The trade for the most part is cocerned with the primitive needs of India and except for the production of cheroots in parts of Madras and Burma the mass of the tobacco grown is consumed in India by the people themselves. [...] The eplanation is to be found in all probability in the fact that the small tivigs aerate the soil and so supply the much-needed oxygen to the roots of the tobacco in sufficient quantities. [...] The ripening process in the tobacco planconsists in the deposition of starch in the leaf and in the gradual elimination of the green colouring matter. [...] The principles underlying the curing of tobacco are simple.' The details of the proem are variously modified to suit the reqUirementi of the numerous classes of tobacco. [...] The green colour slowly disappears and the complete yellowing of the leaves marks the first stage in the death of the plant.
