Memorandum on Latrine for use of Factory Owners Approved by the Board of Public Health Works

1936

4. In the ease of commercial concerns which are avowedly undertaken for making profits and of even seasonal factories where there is a certainty of a recurrence at stated periods for the needs of these facilities the best designs from the sanitary point of view should be adopted. [...] 6. To obviate any feeling of cramping on the part of the users the internal dimensions of whatever kind of latrine is adopted should never be less than a minimum of 3 feet by 3 feet and not greater than 3 feet by 4 feet as it has been found that if too great users will soil the surroundings rather than use the pan. [...] Some kind of roof even a thatched one as a protection against sun should be provided and the superstructure walls and roof of a temporary latrine should be of the simplest kind as money should be spent on the pan and seat rather than on the buildings. [...] A piece of earthenware drain pipe of the diameter of the bore or near size should if available be placed in the top end of the bore to prevent the earth at the top of the bore below the squatting plate from being sodden by urine and washing water. [...] When the bore fills up to 21 feet of the ground the squatting plate and the earthenware pipe may be removed and placed over another bore and the used bore hole filled up with clean earth taken from the new bore hole.
