While there were many representatives from the three higher castes among the Hindus of Maharashtra (namely the Brahmans or priestly class the Kshatriyas or warrior class and the Vaisyas or trading class) the chief group among the Marathas8 RAMDAS AND THE RAMDASIS was the agricultural class which formed the backbone of Sivajl's army and which contained the two imb-castes of Kunbis and Marathas [...] During this worship of about half an hour prayers are uttered by the male head of the household except during special ceremonies when the services of the family priest may be required.2 Once a year the members of the family offer prayers to the spirits of the departed ancestors (Sraddha); and at various times during the day or the evening pious Hindus visit the small village temples salute th [...] Thirdly the Bhagavadglta carries the process a step further when it identifies Vishnu not merely with Krishna the hero of the epic but also with the great Brahman-Atman 0f the Upanishads; and therefore he becomes the Absolute the One without a second the Source of all things and all beings.
