Thus if narcotics and intoxicating liquors exercise so little influence upon the minds and bodies of the people of this country the causes which present the increase of its population with the onward march of time must be sought for elsewhere.( 8 ) I have taken precious good care to consider the subject and after the best consideration that I have been able to give to it I have come to the concl [...] The passage in which the sublime poet speaks of the rows of trees in the blessed Garden of Eden not to say of its artistic grace and beauty so finely and faithfully portrays the orange of this country that I can not resist the temptation of quoting it. [...] The oranges of the hills and the oranges of the plains sometimes differ almost in the same degree as the mangoes of Maldah differ from the mangoes of this country. [...] Lime and orange are so intimately connected with the name of Sylhet in the minds of men that the mention of the one is invariably followed by the recollection of the other as if by means of some potent magical spell. [...] As in the time of Gaur Gobindo the Hindoos domineered so now the power of the Mohammedans was in the ascendant.
