Annual Report of the Department of Fisheries Bengal Bihar and Orissa for the year ending 31st March 1919

1919

The general work of the Department has greatly increased the training and supervision of the work of the newly appointed officers as also the guidance of the work of the others already in the Department and the administrative work leaves very little time. [...] The results regarding the increase in numbers and the question of the quality of the nacre in the specimens cultivated in the tanks will be watched with interest. [...] I The initiation and starting of these societies is due entirely to the exetions of the Co-operative Departments of the two provinces and we have not been able to take our duo share in this work except for explaining to the ignorant fishermen the principles and the necessity of the organisation of co-operative societies among them. [...] Certain special types of fishing like the Baira and Kurz types in the district of Kliulna the donqa type in Dacca the draining dry of fisheries for catching all the fish in any area and several others result in the wholesale destruction of the fish. [...] The public are primarily interested in the cheapness of fish as an article of diet ; but the close combine which controls the sale of fish in Bengal and the indiscrminate destruction of fry are the two main obstacles with which the Deparment is confronted in its efforts to ameliorate the. situation.
