The attention of the Government of India and through it of the Government of Madras was directed in 1868 to the importance of the examination purchase or transcription of Sanskrit Manus -"cripts in Indian Libraries and the framing of printed lists or catalogues of the same. [...] 26 of 1912 on the file of the Subordinate Judge of Tanjore agreed that it was eminently fit that the Library should be preserved and maintained as a Public Library in trust for the public and removed the Library and one lakh of rupees to provide for its up-keep from the subject-matter of the suit. [...] On the whole one may easily say that the total number of manuscripts now in this Library is likely to exceed 30 000 A large number of original records belonging to the last reigning house of Tanjore which will be of very great importance for reconstructing the political and social history of the Mahritha rule in Southern India has recently been transferred to the care of this Library from the Ci [...] the number of 'lines' on a page the 'script' used the 'number of granthas' and the name of the 'author' wherever known are then given.
