Sylviculture Series Indian Forest Memoirs Pinus Longfolia Roxb a Sylvicultural Study

1916

The Pinus longifolia forests s of this tract occupy considerable areas in the valley of the Tons river and its feeders the chief of which are the Rupin and the Pabar -at elevations of 3 000 feet and upwards. [...] Jacob furnishes the following description :-- " The state of the forest in the inner hills is on the whole better than in the outer hills.; this is partly due to the fact that the Bhutias practise permanent cultivation more than the Nepalis and partly owing to the pine reproducing itself more easily than the broad-leaved species. [...] The mixture of chir with blue pine or deodar or both often in combination with oak is one commonly met with near the upper limit of the chir : in such crops reference is made below to the spread of the deodar and blue pine at the expense of the chir where protection is afforded. [...] In the natural habitat of the chir the great bulk of the rain falls during the monsoon. that is from the end. [...] 15 maximum temperature the tree is capable of standing great heat : thus in some of the valleys of the Rawalpindi District at the lower limit of the pine the temperature in the hot season reaches and may possibly exceed that of the station itself.
