The subject of the present volume is the Maurya Period; the establishment of the Maurya dynasty on the throne of Magadha having been chosen as the starting-point because in the present state of our knowledge it is the earliest event in the history of Bengal to which an approximate date can be assigned. [...] and 9 000 elephants whence may be formed some conjecture as to the vastness of his resources.' In his description of the island of Taprobane (Ceylon); he remarks : 3 The island in the former days when the voyage to it was made with vessels constructed of papyrus and rigged after the manner of the vessels of the Nile was though to be twenty days' sail from the country of the PrasiF the distance [...] As to the situation of the Gangarides the only information afforded by Ptoleiny is that they held all the country about the mouths of the Ganges which might include the whole delta and that their territory contained the royal city of Gauge in long. [...] Evidently at the time of Megasthenes' deputation to the court of Sandrokottos the Prasii were the predominant partners in the confederation and their chief city Pgaliputra was regarded as the capital of the whole region. [...] The name Prasii probably represents the Sanskrit prod or prdcya meaning eastern ' a term which was applied in an extended sense to the countries of Oryavaria lying east of PrayAga (Allahabad) the eastern limit of Madhyadesa that is to the peoples of all the region lying between the Himalayas and the Vindhya mountains from Prayaga to the Eastern Ocean—and more particularly to the people of
