He hurried to the celebrated sanctuary of Our Lady of the Eremites to pour at her feet the overflowing feelings of his heart to implore her maternal protection amidst the numberless dangers*he was on the eve of encountering and to obtain through her intercession the true spirit of his vocation. [...] On the 25th June 1763 the day of the horrible massacre of the British the soldiers of Cassim and the mob broke into the hospice of the't apuchins destroyed the whole of the furniture but spared the lives of three missioners who were there and whom they had found in the church preparing themselves for death. [...] But how paltry was the result Not quite oneinundred Rupees—one hundred Rupees to begin the organization of a vicariate the extent of which is equal to that of France! It was preci ely to the noble land of France that the destitute prelate aldrosied his players and his cry of distress found a geArous echo in the country that has been the cradle of the great work of the Association for the Propag [...] But how great was his consternation when he heard that the acquistion of it had swallowed up the whole amount of the allocation which the Cotincil of the Propagation had graned him for the current year I It was pitiful to behold the anxiety of the poor Bishop in quest of a second'-hand purchaser of these articles which he considered too costly for him lest the mission might suffer by this a [...] I disbelieve the latter part of the assertion first for the honour of the fair sex and secondly because it would rove a mighty argument in favour of the thesis if it Gould lie prove+ May Gud enlighten the infidel ; may the spirit of the saintly Bishop who interested himself so paternally in his eternal welfare obtain for him the grace of returning to he Church of Lis forefathers and to the
