Memorandum by the Railway Board on the elimination of racial discrimination in railway services

8. Complaints have often been made m the Assembly of the existence of racial discrimination both in the recruitment of staff and in the treatment meted out after recruitment also in the facilities and amenities afforded both to the staff and to the general public. [...] Complaints of alleged discrimination and action taken.—It is now proposed to refer to certain specific complaints of alleged racial dicrimination in the recruitment of the subordinate staff which have been brought to the notice of the Railway Board and to state the correct postion in respect of the subject matter of each complaint as well as the action taken by the Board. [...] The restriction is imposed on account of the rush of paying traffic at is season and the desirability of limiting the five pass traffic in the terests of the travelling public. [...] Accordingly the Agents of the East Indian Great Indian Peninsula and North Western Railways were instructed to take the necessary action while the Agents of the Bengal Nagpur and Madras and Southern Mahratta Railways were also requested to examine the position on their respective railways with a view to coming into line with the general policy of Goverment in the matter. [...] Copy forwarded to the Agent Bengal-Nagpur Bombay Baroda and Central India Bengal and North-Western Rohilkund and Kumaon Madras and 'Southern Mahratta South Indian and Assam-Bengal Raiways with the request that with the permission of the Board of Directors the principles of the instructions contained above be applied on the Railway.
