Report of the Indian Tariff Board on the Salt Industry

1930

Northern India. 17 21. [...] Karachi. 21 27. [...] In the course of the debate the Hon'ble Sir George Rainy and the Hon'ble Sir George Schuster explained that the decision taken by Government not to refer the case to the Tariff Board was not final and had reference only To the circumstances at the time and promised that the matter would be re-examined in the light of the events that had happened since the previous decision was taken. [...] They are still satisfied as to the essential correctness of the _first two of the three conclusions cited in the opening paragraph of this Resolution ; but as regards the third of these conclusions they consider in the light of recent experience in the production of fine white salt at Karachi and of the emergence of certain other possibilities that it is necessary to re-examine the situation. [...] Further since the cost of transport constitutes the largest item in the determination of the wholesale price of salt the possibility of a reduction in freights must also be considered.
