Government of Bengal Department of Industries Bulletin No. 72 Saponification by Means of Sodium Carbonate

1936

unreacted sodium carbonate can be used up by adding the rosin charge after the completion of the process and also by Ihe use of the calculated quantity of free fatty acids obtained by any of the usual processes of fat splitting. [...] of free fatty acids obtained by any of the fat splitting processes for the utilization of all the soda ash and final reacting up of the balance of 40 per cent.of the glycerides with caustics soda to form the final soap. [...] ash as also on account of the formation of considerable quantities of sodium bicarbonate in the lye medium (due to the disengagement of carbon dioxide) giving rise to complexity of the saline medium and preventing further action of sodium carbonate. [...] It is claimed that by the discovery of the optimum concentration and percentage of soda ash for the best elliciencv of the process and by the neutralzation of the (41 111)()11 soda ash with free fatty acids the prcess can be applied in regular practice. [...] After the completion of the saponification the soap is salted out and the total lye measured of which an aliquot part is taken for the estimation of the alkali with methyl orange as indcator.
