The cessation of trade with enemy countries and the curtailment of trade with France and Belgium were counterbalanced by noticeable increases in the imports from J ava Japan and the United States of America and the exports to the United-Kingdom Japan China and Persia. [...] This article has contributed to the increase in both the volume and the value of class I. The increase in value of class III is largely due to the higher prices of iron and steel and cotton coloured piece-goods. [...] The prices of all the imported articles show considerable increases over those of the previous year except in the case of cotton twist and yarn and grey and white piece-goods. [...] The phenomenal rise in the prices of alizarine and aniline dyes is due to the cutting off of supplies from Germany which had practically monopolised the trade in dye stuffs and to the great demand of the Indian mills for these articles.. [...] 8. The following table shows the value of the import and export trade of the port of Bombay grouped according to the classes under which they are shown in the Government accounts :- Articles.
