Department of Agriculture Madras. Scientific Report of the Coimbatore Agricultural Station for 1918-19
1919
It is usual on the farm to cultivate deeply as soon as the crop is off the land and the effect of such cultivation has never been shown to better advantage than during this year owing to the fact that the heavy rains Beaked into the soil and produced such luxuriant crops as no one else in the neighbourhood possessed. [...] The field was rather low in places and the heavy rains affected the crop so that the wide spacing was not taken advantage of by the crop which gave a poor yield of 352 lb. [...] Owing to the scarcity of fodder experienced during the year this crop was sown particularly thick with the idea of thinning and feeding it later but the heavy rains of May did not permit of the operation being done properly so that the crop remained thick and the earheads small. [...] There was no rain during the planting period which meant excessive cost in irrigation and the heavy rains of November damaged the standing crop and delayed its harvest considerably with the result that a good deal of shedding occurred in the field which is evidenced in a plentiful supply of a voluntary crop in the present season. [...] The season was fair the yields were good and the prices have been the highest ever recorded so that the prospects of the cotton grower appeared never more prosperous.
