The Board of Economic Enquiry Punjab (India). Publication No. 99 Catching and Marketing of Fish in the Punjab

1944

The area between the Indus and the Chenab is known as the Sind Sagar Doab and is an inverted triangle with the base about 100 miles and the apex where the Punjab waters meet the Indus. [...] During the fishing operations the fishermen drag the nets through the entire stretch of water and dive in the cold benumbing and freezing water to disengage the nets when caught by the stumps of trees in the bed of the fishing ground. [...] When the drag net reaches the stake net the group of men on one bank stand still and the other group wade in the water alongside the stake net to join the stationary group and thus the fish in the stretch of water becomes entangled in the drag nets and is landed by dragging the nets to the sandy banks. [...] The only burden to the leaseholders is the payment of the first instalment of the lease in September before the fishing actually commences at the time of the auction of the fishing leases. [...] Earnings of the Contractors.—In cases where the fish contractors are actually the fishermen and employ their own family members to harvest the fish and divide the income equally among themselves it becomvis difficult to apportion the exact share of the income to the particular cotractor.
