Department of Agriculture Bombay Bulletin No. 89 of 1918 Artificial Manures: Experiments on their value for Crops in Western India

1919

In our previous report we wore able to describe the considerable success which we had had in the application of artifiöial manures to tobacco in the Satara District of the Bombay Presidency and wore able to summarise the results as follows :— (1) The local method of sheep-folding is not the most profitable method of manuring tobwo) in this part of Western India." (2) "The use of artificial manure [...] Of all the crops on which we have experimented with artificial manures in the Deccan none has been more disappointing than wheat and the results have a particular importance when the question of increasing the yield of wheat by the application of these manures in the Deooan areas is being"constantly considered. [...] (7) The use of artificial manures (phosphates and nitrogenous manures) tends to hasten the maturity of the cotton.9 The experiments carried out since the above conclusions wore framed have been carried out in what have been very abnormal seasons and the full effect of the cautions expressed that the effimency of manure with cotton depends very largely on the rainfall being regular and normal has [...] (1) At Dharwar experiments were made as to the relative efficiency of increasing the dose of farmyard manure for cotton and of adding a todressing of nitrate of soda or sulphate of ammonia. [...] (2) The essential importance of phosphates in the artificial manures of cotton in our areas is shown by the results of another series of experiments conducted at Dharwar and of which we present the average result of two years' growing.
